Home Sick Pilots

Home Sick Pilots Vol. 1: Teenage Haunts

EPISODE: #4

4/5

In the summer of 1994, a haunted house walks across California. Inside is Ami, lead singer of a high school punk band—who’s been missing for weeks. How did she get there? What do these ghosts want? And does this mean the band has to break up?

Expect three-chord songs and big bloody action as Power Rangers meets The Shining (yes really), and as writer DAN WATTERS (Lucifer, COFFIN BOUND) and artist CASPAR WIJNGAARD (LIMBO, Star Wars, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt) delve into the horrors of misspent youth.

Collects Home Sick Pilots #1-5

A horror comic that is actually readable without getting nauseous! It’s a miracle! Home Sick Pilots is a colorful punk rock, haunted house, teenage angst, ghost story. With three completed volumes total, this first arc really sets up some neat paranormal entities with a lot a heart and only a splash of horror.

The lead character Ami is a struggling teen with a lot of baggage who just wants to feel connected to someone… or something. As the narrator. she provides a lot of insight into her mind and emotions throughout the story. Ami’s relationship with the haunted house she stumbles into and the ghosts who live there is complicated, but you root for her all the same.

Danny thoroughly enjoyed this one, and was pleasantly surprised by it. There are some very neat tricks with the art that are very compelling. Overall it’s a fun and creative story with a lot going on, and while there is some gore, it’s far less than the “horror” genre typically implies.
