Superman: Secret Origin is a fantastic book with… almost as fantastic art. As discussed in the first full episode of Looking for the Best: A Comic Quest, Danny chose this story for two main reasons: Ease of Reading & Nostalgia.
Great for newbies, Secret Origin doesn’t expect you to know everything about Superman. It’s a fun time, not difficult, and acts as a wonderful introduction to the character of Clark Kent for anyone who hasn’t met him yet. It was also a personal favorite of Danny’s, as she is a long-time Smallville fan and has a lot of teenage nostalgia for young Clark. Though, she could do without the creepy drawings of his face while he was young, as they’re probably one of the biggest cons in the whole book. Regardless, the rest of the art is great, just look at that Christopher-Reeve-inspired cover!
This is a good one to pick up if you’d like to read a coming-of-age story about a wholesome superhero. And if you do decide to read it, what do you think? Does it deserve a place on your shelf?
